Description

Known as the “Father of History,” Herodotus was a tireless traveler who recorded in detail in his Histories the causes that led to the Persian Wars, as well as the key figures and events involved—kings, generals, battles, naval engagements, and more.

Herodotus laid the foundations of historical research, as in writing his Histories he conducted systematic investigations to gather written sources and oral testimonies, while also extensively using first-hand observation to collect information.

In this context, Herodotus gathered and presented in his Histories a vast wealth of ethnographic details as well as mythical elements, covering nearly all the peoples of the known world at the time.

The title of “Father of History” was given to Herodotus by Cicero and has remained ever since, as his work sits at the bedside of every archaeologist, while archaeological research continues to confirm his descriptions—even those that were at times considered fanciful.

Herodotus’ Histories, written in the Ionian dialect, were divided by the Alexandrian scholars into nine books, each named after one of the Muses.

The series, which includes the original ancient text, modern Greek translation, and commentary, consists of 4 volumes encompassing all 9 books. Specifically, it includes:

– Volume 1: Book I – Clio, Book II – Euterpe
– Volume 2: Book III – Thalia, Book IV – Melpomene
– Volume 3: Book V – Terpsichore, Book VI – Erato, Book VII – Polyhymnia
– Volume 4: Book VIII – Urania, Book IX – Calliope
