Description

Appian’s Roman History recounts the history of Rome from the founding of the city up to the second century AD. Of the original 24 books, only about half have survived in full, covering the Roman Civil Wars and including episodes such as:

  • A brief history of Rome from Aeneas to the Pax Romana.
  • Civil wars between the Gracchi and Metellus; the first civil war in Rome between Sulla, Marius, and Cinna.
  • The Spartacus uprising and Crassus’ victory.
  • The First Triumvirate of Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus. The role of Cicero. The crossing of the Rubicon and the conflict between Caesar and Pompey. The Gallic Wars. The assassination of Julius Caesar.
  • The conflict between Octavian and Antony.
  • The Second Triumvirate: Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus.
  • The conflict between the armies of Antony and Octavian on one side, and Brutus and Cassius on the other. The suicides of Cassius and Brutus.
  • The reconciliation of Antony and Octavian. Pompey’s blockade of Rome and the resulting famine. Conflicts between Octavian and Pompey. Pompey’s defeat and death.

Appian’s Roman History is one of the few comprehensive accounts of Rome’s transition from a republic to an empire, and of the political and military struggles that followed. No other historian of the period covers such a broad span of time, nor presents the political disputes and military conflicts with such detail.

Each book includes the original text in ancient Greek, a modern Greek translation, and extensive commentary.
