Description

The speeches of Demosthenes, the most prominent Athenian orator with political activity, are essential for understanding ancient Greek rhetoric and politics. His work consists primarily of political and forensic speeches.

The political speeches, such as the Philippics and the
Olynthiacs
, strongly opposed the expansionist policies of Philip II of Macedon, urging Athens to resist Macedonian dominance. These speeches expressed Demosthenes’ ideas on the independence and democracy of Athens.

The forensic speeches of the distinguished orator, such as Against Meidias and On the Crown, concern private and public legal disputes, showcasing his rhetorical skill and legal expertise. These works provide rich insights into Athenian law, society, and political life.

Demosthenes’ eloquence and argumentative skill made him a central figure in Athenian politics of his time and a teacher of classical rhetoric, influencing rhetorical practice for centuries.

All volumes include the original ancient text, its translation into modern Greek, an introduction, and commentary.
