Description

Stoicism, the influential philosophical school of the Hellenistic and Roman periods (300 B.C. – c. 250 A.D.), was founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium and centered at the Painted Stoa (Stoa Poikile).

The core principles of Stoic philosophy are the pursuit of personal virtue, tranquility in the face of things beyond our control, and freedom. Even today, the term “stoic” is used to describe a person who remains calm under pressure.

The Stoics, rather than envisioning an ideal society, sought to confront the world as it was, striving for self-improvement through the virtues of wisdom, gentleness, justice, and integrity. They believed that through personal growth and self-discipline, each individual contributes to the betterment of the world around them.

The “Stoic Philosophers” collection, which includes the original ancient texts, modern Greek translations, and commentary, consists of 12 volumes and includes:

  • Epictetus – Diatribes (4 volumes)
  • Epictetus – Manual, Fragments (1 volume)
  • Marcus Aurelius – Meditations (2 volumes)
  • Posidonius (3 volumes)
  • Plutarch – Moralia 27, Moralia 28 (2 volumes)
