Description
Hesychius of Alexandria, a grammarian of the 5th century AD, is primarily known for the lexicon he compiled under the title Collection of All Words Arranged by Alphabetical Order. In composing his work, Hesychius drew upon earlier lexicons and philological writings, such as those of Aristarchus of Samothrace (3rd–2nd century BC), Apion of the Oasis in Egypt (1st century AD), Heliodorus (1st century AD), and the work Periergopenetes by Diogenianus of Heraclea (2nd century AD).
Hesychius’ lexicon is considered one of the finest and most comprehensive in the Greek language. In it, the lexicographer included, in alphabetical order, all the words and expressions that required explanation, placing particular emphasis on dialects and archaic forms, that is, difficult classical and regional usages. For this reason, Hesychius’ lexicon serves as a unique source for the study of ancient Greek dialects, as well as for the identification of rare and dialectical forms in ancient Greek texts.
