He was a student of Anatolius and Porphyry in Rome, where the two philosophers directed Plotinus\u2019 Neoplatonic school. A leading figure of the Syrian Neoplatonic school, mystic and mathematician, Iamblichus became especially known as the biographer of Pythagoras, whose philosophical work he studied extensively.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"554\">The collection includes the following works, in seven volumes:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"3757\">\n<li data-start=\"556\" data-end=\"659\">\n<p data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"659\"><strong data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"585\">On the Pythagorean Life<\/strong>: A biography of the great philosopher Pythagoras written by Iamblichus.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"1162\">\n<p data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"1162\"><strong data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"707\">Commentary on Pythagoras\u2019 \u201cGolden Verses\u201d<\/strong>: This work by Iamblichus, preserved in an Arabic epitome and translated and published in Greek for the first time, was discovered relatively recently and is not widely known in international bibliography. It presents Iamblichus\u2019 interpretation of each verse of Pythagoras\u2019 <em data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"996\">Golden Verses<\/em> and is of exceptional interest, as it adds significant and new information for forming a more complete picture of the philosophy of this great Neoplatonic thinker.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1534\">\n<p data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1534\"><strong data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1209\">Exhortation to Philosophy (Protrepticus)<\/strong>: Based on the lost <em data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1243\">Protrepticus<\/em> of Aristotle, the Platonic dialogues, and the also lost <em data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1314\">Protrepticus<\/em> of an unknown sophist of the 5th\/4th century BC, Iamblichus develops arguments on the usefulness of engaging in philosophy. At the end, he provides a list of the main Pythagorean precepts and their interpretation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1994\">\n<p data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1994\"><strong data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1575\">On the Common Mathematical Science<\/strong>: In this work, Iamblichus seeks to describe the principles, nature, and usefulness of general mathematical science, which includes all its branches\u2014arithmetic, geometry, music\/harmony, and astronomy. At the same time, he emphasizes the intermediate ontological character of this science, which makes it essential for understanding both the higher world of Ideas and the lower physical world in which we live.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1995\" data-end=\"2220\">\n<p data-start=\"1997\" data-end=\"2220\"><strong data-start=\"1997\" data-end=\"2027\">The Theology of Arithmetic<\/strong>: The only surviving work of <strong data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2081\">arithmetical theology<\/strong> from antiquity. In it, Iamblichus describes the theological properties that the Pythagoreans mainly attributed to the first ten numbers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2221\" data-end=\"2894\">\n<p data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2894\"><strong data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2268\">On Nicomachus\u2019 Introduction to Arithmetic<\/strong>: In interpreting the <em data-start=\"2290\" data-end=\"2318\">Introduction to Arithmetic<\/em> by the Pythagorean philosopher <strong data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2364\">Nicomachus<\/strong>, Iamblichus provides a wealth of information about the science of numbers, unknown from other sources. Thus, this commentary essentially forms a new, original introduction to mathematical science. The appearance of zero among numbers, the method of solving systems of equations known as the <em data-start=\"2668\" data-end=\"2688\">Thymarides blossom<\/em>, and the generation of square and oblong numbers through the recursive addition of successive numbers\u2014all belong to the achievements of ancient mathematics known only through this work of Iamblichus.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2895\" data-end=\"3292\">\n<p data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"3292\"><strong data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"2917\">On the Mysteries<\/strong>: In this theurgical treatise, Iamblichus discusses Greek and Eastern wisdom, the soul, the distinctions among higher beings, divination and divine inspiration, daimones, sacrifices, the symbolism of Egyptian mysteries, Egyptian theology, happiness, fate, and the Good\u2014a work that had great influence on later philosophy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3293\" data-end=\"3757\">\n<p data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3372\"><strong data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3308\">Fragments<\/strong>: Fragments of Iamblichus\u2019 works that do not survive complete:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3375\" data-end=\"3757\">\n<li data-start=\"3375\" data-end=\"3511\">\n<p data-start=\"3377\" data-end=\"3511\"><em data-start=\"3377\" data-end=\"3390\">On the Soul<\/em> (on the nature and activities of the soul, judgment, punishment, and purification after its separation from the body),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3514\" data-end=\"3608\">\n<p data-start=\"3516\" data-end=\"3608\"><em data-start=\"3516\" data-end=\"3539\">Commentaries on Plato<\/em> (interpretations of Platonic dialogues, especially the <em data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3604\">Timaeus<\/em>),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3611\" data-end=\"3757\">\n<p data-start=\"3613\" data-end=\"3757\"><em data-start=\"3613\" data-end=\"3622\">Letters<\/em> (letters to his friends and students discussing topics such as fate, dialectic, virtues, the education of children, marriage, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3759\" data-end=\"3821\"><em>Translation in Modern Greek, introduction, and commentary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; css_params=&#8221;&#8221;] Iamblichus is one of the most important representatives and shapers of Neoplatonic philosophy.
